Thought for the Week

Society norms and expectations change with time, but God’s expectations of us are settled forever in heaven in the Word of God. Psalms 119:89 says, “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven”.

It might be foolish to debate the accuracy, but widely repeated generalized generational descriptions can reasonably highlight that societal expectations evolve. You can Google generation X,Y,Z characteristics for your own investigation. I’ll lift one quote - “Gen Z grew up in an era in which societal standards began to shift dramatically. Norms were flipped upside down”.

In an era of independence, acceptance, questioning authority and finding one’s own way, the thought may seem convenient that you go your way, I’ll go mine, and we’ll all end up at the same place.  In 1920 James Rowe wrote a song:

There are many paths through this world of sin,
But there’s only one I shall travel in;
’Tis the old Cross Road, or the way called “Straight”—
There is just one way to the pearly gate.

Refrain:
There is just one way to the pearly gate,
To the crown of life and the friends who wait;
’Tis the old Cross Road, or the way called “Straight”—
There is just one way to the pearly gate.

There are some who sneer at the old Cross Road,
At the pearly gate and the soul’s abode;
Yet I mind them not, but, with happy song
And assurance sweet, still I press along.

Others risk their souls on some new-made way,
Thinking they will come to the gate someday;
Oh, may they find out, ere their lives are done,
That the old Cross Road is the only one.

He called it “The Old Cross Road”, but I could humbly suggest an alternate title might be “There is Just One Way”. The scriptures support that. St. John 10:1-10 says, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

There is but “One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” – Eph 4:5-6.

And finally, Luke 9:23 says “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
