Today

Matthew 6:31-34 states "Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?  (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."

One of the hardest things to do is live in “today”. We all have plans, worries, concerns, etc. but we are only promised NOW. Living in TODAY is hard, because it means giving up control, it means trusting that God will do what is best for us. And even though we have all these biblical promises, we somehow think if we put all our energy and all our focus into everything, it will somehow change the outcome. It may or it may not!  In the meanwhile, we have missed the pleasures of the now.

One day, I was so wrapped up in thoughts, I did not hear my granddaughter tell me she loved me. I have promised myself that will never happen again.

Too Big To Fail

We hear this all the time. We put our money in banks that we think cannot fail, even though most of these banks did not exist when we were younger. We buy stocks in company’s we believe are so big that they cannot fail, companies that did not exist 20 years ago. We put our faith in people we don’t really know or know so little and we are shocked when they fail to live up to their promises.  Yet when we are asked to believe or trust God, we think that is somehow superstitious or even crazy.

Philippians 4: 6-8 states, "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

As a song we sing says:

“YOU HAVE TRIED THE PATH OF WORLDLY PLEASURE
SOUGHT FOR PEACE THE WORLD CAN NEVER GIVE
OH BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU PLACE YOUR TREASURES
YOU NEED ONE TO TEACH YOU HOW TO LIVE.”

Try Jesus, He never fails!

Isaiah 40: 28-31

“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.”  Isaiah 40: 28-31

We need to be reminded daily of God’s presence, God’s power and God’s strength in our everyday walk. Lord help us to remember what our great God has done, what He has created, and what He can do if we let him direct each step of our journey!

Teach me Lord to wait!

Our Faith is in Jesus

Hebrews 11 provides a chronicle of the heroes of faith from the Old Testament.  It ends with “and these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:  God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.”

Hebrews 12:11-3 says “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside very weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run the patience the race that is set before, Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endure the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.  For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lets ye be wearied and faint in your minds”.

Both the Old and New Testament point to Christ.  In 2 Peter 1:3 it tells us that he has given us “all things that pertain unto life and godliness, though the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue”.    I believe these scriptures tell us he has given everything we need, but it is up to us individually to lay aside every weight.  We sometimes sing a song, “My hope is built on nothing less, than Jesus’ blood and righteousness, I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus name, On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand”.  It goes on to say “when all around my soul give way, he then is all my hope and stay”.  I’m thankful Jesus is that  rock and anchor to the soul.

Jesus is my Intercessor

We sometimes sing “I’ve Just Heard from Heaven”.  The lyrics tell a testimony that “Once I wondered out in sin, far from God Away, but the Savior took me in, gave me peace that day, All my heart to him I’ve given, no more sin allowed, I’ve just heard from heaven and its all right now.”   The chorus shares a personal experience;  “I’ve just heard from heaven and this one thing I know, my sins are all forgiven, he washed me white as snow, the load that once I carried, he took away some how, I’ve just heard from heaven and its all right now”.  With the song having shared the testimony of having been Sanctified, the next couple verses deal with the realities of life that will eventually bring to try our faith. “Trials come to you, burdens hard to bear, but our heartache grief and pain, he will gladly bear”.  There is a line had has been burning in my mind:  “He’s my intercessor there, so at his feet I bow, I’ve just heard from heaven and it’s all right now”.

While there is joy in going this Sanctified way and it gets sweeter every day, trials and disappointments will come; we are all travelers to eternity.  When I face those trials, do I realize the intercessor I have with God, the creator of the ends of the earth?

We have an advocate with the Father (I John 2:1), that was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin (Heb 4:15)”.  So he understands the trials of life, in “all points”.

First John goes on to say “he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world”.  So it’s not a big leap of reasoning to say this advocate is all powerful.

He is also very merciful and remembers that we are but dust:  James 5:11 says “the Lord is very pitiful and of tender mercy”.  Even on the cross, while he who did no sin was dying to pay the price for our sins, he heard the humble request of the thief “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom”.  The thief had nothing to give Jesus (we don’t either), his death was certainly at most a few hours away, and he could certainly not preach, teach or do good deeds nailed to a cross.  It was entirely mercy when Jesus told him “to day shalt thou be with me in paradise”.  Remember Jesus saying “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do”?

With an advocate that loves us that much, with that much mercy, and that much power, can’t I trust him not only to Sanctify, but to guide and guard through the trials of life?  No matter the situation, if I’ve submitted to will of his Spirit within my heart, I’ve just heard from heaven and it’s all right now.
