Abiding in the Lord

The Lord Jesus Christ described our relationship with God as a farmer growing fruit (John Chapter 15). Jesus said that he was the “true vine” and that we are the branches that grow on that vine. To be successful Christians we must stay connected to the true vine and allow God to shape us and work with us on a daily basis.

In John 15, Jesus uses the word “abide” seven times. He said in verse five “He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit…” To abide means to remain stable or fixed, or to continue in a place with patience. As we stay patiently connected to this true vine we receive the life-sustaining nutrients from God that we need to grow and bear fruit for him. Jesus also warns us in verse 6 that if we do not abide in him that our branch will be removed, and that we will wither and die. God’s will for us is that we “abide” in his love (verse 10), and that we experience a “full joy” in serving and fellowshipping with Christ Jesus verse 11).

Are you connected to the “true vine” today? I encourage you to get connected and to stay patiently connected to Jesus Christ. Allow God to to work with you, to correct and to purge you, and to bless you with his wonderful love and joy.

Ephesians 3:14-21 KJV

The power of prayer is amazing for our lives. If you desire a relationship with our God, he is more than able to work in your life!

Ephesians 3:14-21 14For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,  15Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

20Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Have a great week!

Forgiving Others

As a follow up to last week’s “Thought of the Week” on Forgiveness, the question comes to mind, “Am I required to forgive and not hold a grudge?” All too often in life, it’s easy to keep negative thoughts about someone who may have hurt us. However, continuing to hold a grudge will hinder us from truly forgiving. Even though we have every reason not to forgive, Jesus tells us if we want to be happy and be Christlike, we must forgive. Jesus was the perfect role model. We must learn to forgive which means letting go of any grudge.

A song written by the Issacs, “Why Can’t We?” states,

Chorus:
If God could love someone and find the good within,
Inspite of what they’ve done, no matter where they’ve been,
If He can let it go and set the debtor free,
If He can keep forgiving you and me,
Why can’t we?

Forgiveness

Jesus taught Peter in the book of Matthew about forgiveness.

Matthew 18: 21-22 - Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Matthew 6:14-15 - For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Love

St. John 15: 12-14 (KJV)  "This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you."

There truly is no greater love than the love that Jesus Christ showed when he gave his life on the cross of Calvary.  This sacrifice was given so that each one of us could be filled with God's love. Today, let God's love rule in your heart and mind.
