Eternal Life

The Bible teaches that man has a two dimensional existence. One dimension is a natural body that is capable of carrying out an earthly existence. This natural body has a finite existence and will return to the dust of the earth.  The second and invisible dimension of man is the soul.  This soul will live forever. The eternal destination of our soul is completely determined by our faith and conduct on this earth.

1 Corinthians 15:44 says, "It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body."

James 4:14 states, "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away."

In 1 John 5:11-13 we read, "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

Psalm 1:1-3 (KJV)

Have you ever planted a tree in your yard?  If you have, there are items to consider that will affect the growth of the tree.  You look at how much sunlight the tree will need, you consider the water source for the tree, you take into account the type of existing soil, and so on.  If one of these items is off, the tree will not grow as well as it should, or maybe it will not grow at all.

Our spiritual man is no different.  We should consider the items that help us grow spiritually and make sure we have the correct balance.

Psalm 1:1-3 states, "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  But his delight is in the law of the Lord ; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

Let us strive to be trees that are prosperous for God.

Fellowship

I love to fellowship in and out of our regularly scheduled services!  The weekends events prior to our Sunday services had a direct, positive contribution to the way the Holy Spirit moved in our meetings.  Our working together and our eating together helps strengthen our bonds.  It reminds us of how precious the people are that God has placed in our lives with which to worship .  It also brings to the forefront our need of each other to be effective.  As Sis. Jeannette Collins reminded us last night in our evening service, everyone has a talent and God can use all talents to His glory.  As we move away from a weekend packed with fellowship, let's remember each other this week in prayer.  A simple verse for the week.

1 Thessalonians 5:25 states, "Brethren, pray for us."

Please pray for me and I will pray for you.  God Bless!

Joshua 4:6-7 (KJV)

I have heard the phrase many times in my life “getting back to the basics”.  For me that always meant simplifying things.  It was usually given to me when my life became too complicated and I was losing focus or direction.  I needed to go back to some of the core values in my life.  I have employed that same phrase and action in my spiritual life.

Joshua Chapter 4 always comes to mind when I think of getting back to the basics.  In this chapter when the children of Israel were crossing the river Jordan, Joshua was given explicit instructions by God to gather 12 stones from the river “where the priests’ feet stood firm”.  There was a specific reason for this commandment.  God was instructing them to building a memorial for generations to speak and know about this miraculous event in history.  Something that would remind them of the great deliverance God had provided for them and bring them back to the basics of God’s goodness.

Joshua 4: 6 & 7 says, "That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?  Then you shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever."

When things get tough, complicated and you start to lose focus; get back to the basics!  I encourage you to find a physical or spiritual memorial in your life.  Something that quiets the inner storms and allows you to focus on the Spirit of God and the wonderful things he has done and the wonderful things he will do!

9/11

This week marks the 16-year anniversary of 9/11.  I remember that day vividly and the horror and terror that was felt by the whole country as we watched the destruction of the World Trade Center Twin Towers.  We should always remember and pray for all the families that were impacted by this great tragedy.  That one historical event would change the course of world events for years to come.

The other memory I have of that event was the special church service that was arranged for the evening of 9/11.  I specifically recall the tone of the service and statements made by our Raleigh leadership.  Yes, this was a tragic event that caused anxiety and anger for lots of people; however, we should not forsake what we know.  We should not give into the hatred and fear.  We have hope in the Love of God!  That message still resonates today.

2 Timothy 1:7 says “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”

As we remember this day, let us remember that we should not let the devil put things in our lives that terrorize us, rather we have the all mighty God on our side.  He has given us power, love and mind that can combat the things of the devil meant to steer us off course.
