God is our Helper

Genesis 15:1 states, "After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward."

In Psalm 56:3 we read, "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee."

Romans 8:31, "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?"

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
by Martin Luther

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

Demas

"Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: ´╗┐For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica;" II Timothy 4:9-10

What a wonderful opportunity and a divine calling for Demas to have been a part of the missionary group with Apostle Paul, a man whose conversion rocked the very foundations of the Jewish religion and changed forever the world of the Gentiles.

It is reasonable to conclude that Demas deserted the Apostle for reasons related to enticements of the civilization that was around him.  At some point, he must have claimed his faith but failed to practice his faith in this present world. He apparently traded self-sacrifice, humility, enthusiasm for lost souls, and esteem of the Gospel for his love of this present world. What a sad commentary on the life of one who must have started out with great resolve and purpose only to be drawn away by his own appetite for this present world.

Come Unto Me

Even though Christ’s physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit is very much alive and active throughout the world.  His Holy Spirit continually strives with the “heart” of all that might serve him.  This great invitation can be found in Matthew 11:27-29, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Today, if you find you are in need of true peace and rest, give Jesus Christ your life and put all of your hope in Him.  His arms of mercy and love are outstretched to all that will accept his great invitation!

1 Kings 17: 13-16 (KJV)

This weekend I had an opportunity to be with my parents and help after my Mom’s surgery.  It was an opportunity that I chose to take to reciprocate the love displayed through the years they took care of me growing up.  I thought about opportunities that we have in our lives and believe that God provides different types of opportunities for us daily.  These opportunities show up in different shapes and sizes.

We may have an opportunity to display some level of Grace to someone in need or display our determination and faith that God will see us through however we are tried.  It made me think of the story of Elijah and the widow woman in 1 Kings chapter 17.  When the widown met Elijah, she was going to make a last meal for her and her son because a drought in the land had kept them from having food.  1 Kings 17:13-16 reads, "And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as though hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.  For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth.  And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.  And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah."

Elijah told her something that day, and she was presented with an opportunity.  In the story, the widow chose to display her determination and faith in God by doing what God had asked her to do.

Let us take each day and look at the opportunities that God has for our lives, especially if you do not have a relationship with God.   Take advantage of the opportunity while you have breath and serve the God that provides our blessings.

Feed Me Jesus

We had some extraordinary meetings this past Sunday.  Both the morning and evening services were rich with the blessings of the Holy Spirit.  I personally walked away from yesterday with my cup running over and the song came to me this morning.

Feed Me Jesus
Feed me Jesus, feed me all the time.
Fill my spirit with thy love divine.
Dear Lord, let’s talk it over, tell me what to do.
Just feed me Jesus, I’m gonna make it through

I believe that when we come to worship expecting that God has something special for us, we will be blessed.

Ephesians 3:14-19 states, "For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;  That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God."
