Acts 10:34-35 (KJV)

Acts 10:34-35 states: “Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:   But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.”  This passage is one of my favorites because it exemplifies how much God desires for all people to obtain salvation, while at the same time specifying the need for holiness of heart and life.

Webster’s 1828 dictionary contains the following definition of fear: “In good men, the fear of God is a holy awe or reverence of God and his laws, which springs from a just view and real love of the divine character, leading the subjects of it to hate and shun every thing that can offend such a holy being, and inclining them to aim at perfect obedience.”  Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines sanctification as “the act of God's grace by which the affections of men are purified or alienated from sin and the world, and exalted to a supreme love to God.”

I don’t believe any of us have the ability to satisfy the requirements of Acts 10:35 on our own.  After we have confessed our sins and received God’s forgiveness, we need a second work of grace, through the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, that will purify our affections and keep them pure in order to work righteousness.  Although use of the word sanctification is not mandatory, I believe the experience that is defined by this word is mandatory.  Without this experience, we would fail to fear God and work righteousness.  Without this second work of grace, I believe people will revert back to their sinful ways and will be lost.

I’m so glad I’m sanctified.  Hallelujah to the Lamb!
