Is the Bible Progressive?

With the presidential debates I started wondered exactly what is progressive?  A quick web search provided:   "1) happening or developing gradually or in stages; proceeding step by step, and 2) (of a group, person, or idea) favoring or implementing social reform or new, liberal ideas."  Now this isn't about politics....

One of the main attributes of a healthy business is that it constantly changes with the competition, technology, and society.  Imagine a company that manufactured 8-track tapes, and didn't change to cassettes, imagine if they didn't move from cassettes to CDs, or from CDs to MP3 players.  ....but this isn't about the health of a company or business.

It makes sense to reference the immutable Word of God.  Maybe Paul was progressive when he said "To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some".  Jesus certainly brought change in ushering out the old, corrupt, hypocritical Jewish hierarchy of the time and bringing in the new covenant.

Its much easier to identify scripture that anchors our salvation.  So much advertising focuses on "new", but Paul wasn't speaking well of the audience on Mars Hill in Acts 17:21 when he said “For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.”

Psalms 119:89 "For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven."  Heb 13:8: "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."  Malachi 3:6 "For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed."  Jeremiah 6:16 "Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein."

We improve our technology and businesses, but the word of God and His Salvation is perfect.  Any effort to change it become a facsimile or copy.  No wonder our forefathers commonly prayed "Lord choose out our changes".

Now on the politics, Benjamin Franklin said  "He who shall introduce into public affairs the principles of primitive Christianity will change the face of the world.”  Its a deeply meaningful statement.  Maybe he perceived some difference between primitive Christianity and progressive/modern some 200 years ago?
