James 3: 2-6 (KJV)

In James 3: 2-6 we read, "For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.   Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.   Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.   Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!  And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell."

In James 1: 19-20 we read, "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:   20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God."

Psalm 19: 14 states, "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer."

We need God’s guidance in everything that we say.  This statement is true in every stage of life.  As a parent, I would not say anything to my children that I thought may be hurtful, discouraging, or damaging to them.  This care and concern should not be limited to our communication with our children.  If we exercise this same discretion in all types of communication (voice, text, e-mail, or social media), then I believe we will avoid the majority of unnecessary conflict and strife.  We live in an age of fast and instant communication.  It pays to be slow to speak in order to allow God to direct the words of our mouth.
