Living a Victorious Life-Part 1-The Nature of Sin

The following is part of the Living a Victorious Life Bible Study held on September 25, 2015.

Once we come to God and receive His Holy Spirit there is a new life to live.  How do we daily live for God?  How is it possible to live this life of holiness required in the scriptures?  In this part of our Bible study series “Defending the Gospel of Jesus Christ", we will examine how we can live a victorious life!

From the beginning God has always wanted us to be obedient.  This is evident by the record of Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis.  The only law that God had instituted was not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  As we know Adam and Eve sinned by disobeying God and eating the fruit.  From this time sin entered into their hearts and was passed onto all of mankind but God still required obedience.  The first component of this study will be to examine what is the meaning of Sin and if we are to be victorious, how is sin defeated.

Romans 6:1-2 states, "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?"  From this scripture it is clear God does not want us to continue sin.  So if God does not want us to continue in sin, it is imperative that we can define its meaning.  Sin can be described in two ways.  One is the “nature of sin” and the other is “sins committed”.

The Bible describes the nature of sin in Ephesians 2:2-3, "Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others."

This nature of sin is explained in another way in Romans 6:6-7, "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be."  Romans 5:12-13 states, "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law."

The “nature of sin” is what motivates or causes men and women to commit sins.  The Apostle Paul explains in Romans 7:20-21, "Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.  I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me."   “Sins committed” is defined as a wilful breaking of the divine law; any violation of, lack of conformity to, or disobedience to, the divine will or the state or condition of one who has thus transgressed.
