Tell Me The Story Of Jesus

1 John 4: 9-11 states, “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.”

The love of this story isn’t a feel-good, surface or skin deep love, but a deep, righteous, self-sacrificial love.  He could not doubt have said, “let there be salvation” and just as the worlds were formed at His word, I believe we could have had salvation.  In the plan He set up, the righteous God of Heaven couldn’t forgive / excuse sin and provide his Holy, Righteous Spirit in our hearts without a blood sacrifice to redeem us from Sin.   And so Jesus left the splendor of heaven to be born among sinful men, to be our high priest.  “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin”  Hebrews 4:15

To feel the love and peace we feel at Christmas seems much more natural than in the shadows of the anguish and evil around the cross, but He was born to be a sacrifice for our Sin.

We sometimes sing a song,
"Tell Me the Story of Jesus" by Frances J. Crosby

Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart every word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.
Tell how the angels in chorus,
Sang as they welcomed His birth,
“Glory to God in the highest!
Peace and good tidings to earth.”

Tell of the cross where they nailed Him,

Writhing in anguish and pain;
Tell of the grave where they laid Him,
Tell how He liveth again.
Love in that story so tender,
Clearer than ever I see;
Stay, let me weep while you whisper,
“Love paid the ransom for me.”

The birth (and death) of Jesus brings a deeper meaning to that final verse of the first reference:  “Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.”  (1 John 4:11).  It is so much deeper than the awe inspired by today’s praise worship, but extends to real self sacrificial love.  “And he said to them all, if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
