1 John 3: 18-21-KJV

1 John 3: 18-21 states, "My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God."

God knows all about us. He knows our thoughts, deeds, actions. Most importantly, He knows the condition of our heart down to the very intent. In our walk with God, it is up to each individual to make sure to maintain that intimate relationship with Him, and to keep our heart tender before Him. There is a hymn that comes to mind:

When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well...
With my soul...

1 Chronicles 4:10-KJV

1 Chronicles 4:10 states, "And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested."

In our lives, we may be presented with tough choices, trials or blessings.  It is during any of these times that there is opportunity to learn more about God and how He is sovereign.  The prayer that Jabez prayed has real life application in that Jabez knew where his strength, guidance and blessings came from.  Therefore, in our lives it is important that we seek God and look to Him at every opportunity.  Of significance was Jabez’s desire for God to keep him from evil.  After all, God’s promises are true, and as Jabez prayed, God granted him that which he requested.

Remember to look to God in everything you do.

Micah 6: 7-8 KJV

Micah 6: 7-8

7. Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

8. He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

Man truly complicates what God requires from each of us; but through the following scripture we can be reminded of the simplicity that is found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Colossians 3:2 KJV

Colossians 3:2 states, "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."

Each of us has a choice as to where we set our affection.  The outcome of this choice determines what is the driving force in our life and will dictate how we spend our time.  As earthly things are in opposition to heavenly things, a person can not possess an equal love for both.  The love for one will extinguish the love for the other.  If we love God supremely and want heaven to be our eternal home, then we must set our affection on things above.

“My heart is fixed oh God on Thee,
My eyes are now on things above,
From worldly yokes praise God I’m free,
My heart o’erflows with joy and love.”

Matthew 22:36-38 (KJV)

As part of its definition of love, Webster’s 1828 dictionary states: “The love of God is the first duty of man, and this springs from just views of his attributes or excellencies of character, which afford the highest delight to the sanctified heart.  Esteem and reverence constitute ingredients in this affection, and a fear of offending him is its inseparable effect.”  Below are a few verses that this definition of the love of God brings to mind:

Matthew 22:36-38 states, "Master, which is the great commandment in the law?   Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.   This is the first and great commandment."

Psalm 1:1-2 reads, "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night."

In Romans 7:22 we read, "For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:"

While Ecclesiastes 12:13 states, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."

Romans 12:9 says, "Let love be without dissimulation.  Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good."
