In the English language, use of the word “if” indicates that something must happen before something else can happen. The word “if” is used to talk about the result of something that may happen to be true. The word if is used in the Bible over 1,500 times.  A few of the more well-known passages of Scripture are:

"If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."  2 Chronicles 7:13

"If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:."  Psalm 66:18

"If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small."  Proverbs 24:10

"If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:"   Isaiah 1:19

"If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?"  Luke 12:28

"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." John 8:36

"If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men." Romans 12:18

"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit."  Galatians 5:25
