John 8:12 (KJV)

In many places, the Bible discusses light and darkness, but one beautiful verse is found in John 8:12: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” This isn’t the only place that the Bible compares Jesus to the light, in fact, we see similar comparisons in John 1:9, John 9:5, 2 Corinthians 4:4, and many other places.

Jesus is our light. When we allow Him in our lives, he helps us to understand his Truth, and makes our path more clear. His light brings us spiritual growth, contentment, comfort, and peace. The light drives out the darkness that would consume us if we would allow it.

And what of that darkness? The Bible uses the darkness to describe hate (1 John 2:11) and evil/sin (Luke 11:34). We also associate darkness with secrecy, confusion, and fear. Most people do not seek out a life of these things, but before Jesus comes into our lives, we don’t have any option except to live in sin.

When we follow Jesus, everything changes. When we follow Jesus, we “shall have the light of life”. Not just any light: the light of the glory of Jesus, the light of life in and with Him. This is true life. We don’t have to just “go through the motions” in life. When Jesus dwells within us, we can live joyfully and victoriously here and now, with the full assurance of eternal life and a home in Heaven.
