Joy

Webster's dictionary defines Joy as 1) to experience great pleasure or delight : REJOICE, 2) the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.

Joy is different from happiness. Happiness is an emotion that comes from what is going on in our life at the present moment, and that happiness changes as the conditions around us change. Happiness can go away and be replaced by grief or sorrow, but joy can be constant.  Joy is an assurance that God is in control and whatever conditions or circumstances confront us, we can have confidence that everything is going to be alright.

Nehemiah 8:10 "Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength."

Psalm 30:5 "For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."

Isaiah 12:3 "Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation."

Happiness and good times may come and go, but our joy can remain unchanged.  Joy is based on our relationship with Christ, and our belief that he is in control and always wants what is best for us.
